ChatGPT Ads are adding Sponsored Agents, a new experience that lets users open a clearly labeled conversation with the advertising business after clicking an ad. OpenAI is testing the format with selected US advertisers, extending the paid journey beyond the initial placement without immediately sending the user to a merchant website.

The change gives businesses an opportunity to answer product questions and address purchase concerns inside ChatGPT. Users can then follow a link to the advertiser’s website when they are ready to take the next step.

Key Takeaways: What ChatGPT Sponsored Agents Mean for Advertisers

  • Sponsored Agents let users begin a business-sponsored conversation after clicking a ChatGPT ad.
  • The conversation is clearly labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s independent response and the user’s original chat.
  • Users can ask follow-up questions before visiting the advertiser’s website, extending the consideration stage inside ChatGPT.
  • The format is being tested with selected advertisers in the United States.
  • Shopify and HubSpot integrations connect ChatGPT Ads with ecommerce and CRM workflows.
  • OpenAI has not announced affiliate tracking, commission attribution or partner-level reporting for the journey.

How ChatGPT Sponsored Agents Work

According to OpenAI’s announcement, a user who sees a relevant ad can choose to start a conversation with the sponsoring business. The agent can answer follow-up questions about the advertiser’s products or services before directing the user to its website.

OpenAI says the sponsored conversation is distinct from both its independent answers and the original conversation started by the user.

This is also different from the Amazon DSP pilot for ChatGPT Ads. Amazon’s pilot concerns how selected advertisers purchase ChatGPT inventory. Sponsored Agents concern the experience that follows an ad interaction.

The Ad Click Becomes a Conversation

In a conventional campaign, the click usually sends the user directly to a landing or product page. Sponsored Agents insert another stage between the ad and the advertiser’s website.

A shopper could ask whether a product fits a particular space, compare specifications or raise an objection before leaving ChatGPT. The agent may therefore handle work normally assigned to a landing page or product comparison tool.

This creates a longer journey:

Advertisers will need to judge the conversation as part of campaign performance rather than treat the initial click as the only meaningful interaction. Affiverse’s ChatGPT Ads guide covers the wider questions around targeting, costs and attribution on the platform.

What Affiliate and Performance Teams Need to Track

The new step introduces an attribution question for campaigns involving affiliates, publishers, or other acquisition partners. If a partner influenced the original demand, the Sponsored Agent could become an additional touchpoint before the shopper reaches the merchant.

OpenAI’s announcement does not explain whether an original referral source will persist through the Sponsored Agent and into the advertiser’s website. It also does not describe affiliate commissioning, partner identifiers, or reporting at individual-partner level.

Performance teams should establish how campaign parameters pass into the final website visit, whether analytics identify engagement with the agent and how assisted conversions will be reported. OpenAI’s announcement does not yet provide those operational details.

Shopify and HubSpot Bring Ads Into Existing Workflows

OpenAI has also introduced integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. HubSpot customers can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create campaigns, track performance, and follow up on leads from their CRM environment.

US-based Shopify merchants can use a ChatGPT Ads app to create and manage campaigns using products already available through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI says the app will become available internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads operate from September 23.

The integrations may make campaigns easier to launch, but they do not confirm affiliate attribution or commission tracking.

What Advertisers Still Need to Know

Sponsored Agents remain a test with selected US advertisers. OpenAI has not published independent performance results, detailed pricing, or conversion benchmarks for the format.

Advertisers still need clarity on conversation reporting, lead ownership, website handoff, and controls over agent responses. The launch shows ChatGPT Ads moving beyond placement and into the consideration stage of the customer journey.
