The first installment of Monday Night Football features the Broncos and Chiefs in an AFC West clash at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Patrick Mahomes is back after recovering from ACL & MCL tears. His counterpart, Bo Nix, also returns after fracturing his ankle in last year’s playoffs.

Denver swept the season series with Kansas City last season. The Broncos also supplanted the Chiefs as AFC West champion, ending a nine-year run of divisional supremacy for Kansas City.
The Chiefs added Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to the fold in the offseason. Tight end Travis Kelce also returned for his 14th season.
Denver’s biggest offseason acquisition came in landing former Miami WR Jaylen Waddle. Waddle and WR1 Courtland Sutton give Nix two strong targets in the passing attack. Expect the Broncos to lean on the aerial attack against a new-look secondary for the Broncos. Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson both left to join the Rams.
Rookie CB Mansoor Delane (LSU) will be tested in his professional debut tonight, as Denver head coach Sean Payton favors a pass-first attack. Nix threw the ball 46 times before getting hurt in the playoff loss to Buffalo.
Kansas City will look to establish the running game with Walker to take some pressure off Mahomes. Kelce, Worthy, and WR1 Rashee Rice can expect to see their fair share of targets tonight. The Broncos counter with Patrick Surtain III, who is widely recognized as the NFL’s best cornerback. Expect Surtain to shadow Rice, who caught six balls against the Broncos in his only appearance against them last season.
There is one significant injury heading into MNF. The Chiefs will be without starting left tackle Josh Simmons (back) tonight. Undrafted rookie Khalil Benson will be forced into action after he struggled some with pass protection during training camp. That’s a scary blind-side proposition for Mahomes as he works his way back from injury.
Denver displayed its penchant for winning close games last season. The Broncos were 11-2 in games decided by eight points or less, including both wins against Kansas City.

For all of the reasons detailed above, we like Nix to have at least 35 passing attempts. Kansas City’s revamped secondary will likely take some time to gel, and Payton’s offensive attack will try to exploit it.
Nix attempted 37 and 38 passes, respectively, in the wins over Kansas City last season. Tonight should be no different.
